Postcard from Waikiki

The picture shows what is. As you
Can see, the view is nice enough:
The cliff which plummets to the sea,
The palm trees (fixed but surely swaying),
Golden sand and sun-tanned bathers.
Not much more to want, someone
Might think, but I know something's
Missing: you. A place like this,
However splendid, cannot be
The paradise which everybody says
It is for one who's come without
The one he'd hoped to bring along.

Another memory. You’ve opened a door long shuttered with this one. In my earlier days I was a world traveller making trips to exotic destinations almost monthly but always alone and for business. I recall standing in locations considered splendid and magnificent only to feel sadness at having no one to share them with; my family and friends thousands of miles away. And on return, those absent friends and family felt cheated in my retelling of what I had seen.
