A Nation of Eichmanns

A perspicacious woman once called evil
Banal. What she meant, it seems, is that
The acts somebody labels evil afterward
Are, as they're done, quite dull, and they're
Done by dull people. This we witness
Every day, as millionaires refuse to raise
The wages of those who are poor, as someone
Who is more concerned with dinner than
With human lives decides to murder people
Who, themselves, are sitting down to
Breakfast, by remote control, as entire
Nations suffer strangulation at the hands
Of emperors and toadies who want more
Respect from them. A family hoping
To escape from violence and poverty
Sits, stuck, forgotten, at the border,
Camping out in mud and snow. The cops
Who kill all are set free, and all of these
Things are so banal, so completely ordinary,
That they do not make the news. Instead,
The readers breathlessly announce the
Kidnapping, by heinous villains, of a
Singer's dogs.
