I saw the devil in Saginaw

I chased the boy on the skateboard
Who would not wait for me
To show off, when he gave me the chance,
That I knew some skills too.

We skated
Around a sole tree on a giant field
Just off campus. The tree was called
The tree of life. He pointed at

The crushed butts of cigarettes
By the few roots that showed
And laughed at it. I laughed too
Though I didn’t find it funny.

I talked of music, movies I liked;
“You look like Kurt Cobain, you know”
Showing off my knowledge of American
TV shows.

He simply nodded along
But never spoke until I grew bored
Of talking. Was he annoyed?
Why’d I even come out today?

As dusk deepened to night he crept
Closer to me and gazed with eyes
Of intensity and gave me a kiss
And mispronounced my name.
