Days of '88

That Tracy Chapman summer

when we both scooped ice cream

at Swensen's on Brattle Street,

how smitten I was with Becca K:

Jewish, smart, assertive, beautiful,

and four years younger than I was

when such a gap was vast.

Oh, the years of crushes is what this makes me think :) I remember Tracy Chapman coming onto the scene, how you'd hear her songs everywhere on the radio, in cars, in backyards, etc. So that sets the time really well for me. I liked how the moment is described giving us a complete glimpse of where your memories are at. I really enjoyed the overall nostalgic and wistful tone of this. Beautiful writing, c'est toujours un plaisir, merci.

I like the poem. It has nice alliteration that keeps it from seeming prosy. I wonder if something like "soda shop" would be better than "wee shop" but that's fine if you prefer it. Also, "when such a gap seemed vast" would add another dash of alliteration and avoid the repetition of the passive "was."
