Grass Snake

Love,

with stealth in the stillness of the night,

entering my wounded heart

from another wounded heart

across space and time.

Like a grass snake,

tired after a day’s long crawling,

coiling your cold body

against my warm heart,

imprinting the dorsal scales,

letting your poison slowly steer.

Love,

sliding along my body soundlessly,

pausing at the window of my soul,

raising your head,

peering within—

ensnared by secrets and dreams,

dancing like breath in the frosty air.

You hiss in a voice

peppered with puzzling tones.

You dance with a swirl & swish

and my heart—the poor fool—

aches, adores.

Love,

I know you

and your serpentine mysteries

by the muck & memories

your crimson crawling leaves

in its wake.

Love,

with stealth in the stillness of the night,

you’ve entered my wounded heart

from another wounded heart,

leaving it to softly melt

& meltingly mend.

“softly melt/and meltingly mend.” Brilliant and beauty—a real jewel—the entire poem, but these words in particular. Hope to see more soon.

I'm with Jim. The entire poem is quite good. The first stanza is outstanding.

This is a great poetic conceit. The imagery, the quality of ideas, and the conviction running the poem is just plain excellent.

The first stanza works as a stand-alone poem, too.

Great work.

A strong return, Yayāti :>)

We admire the grass snake metaphor and we particularly appreciate 'the dorsal scales', 'dancing like breath in the frosty air', 'peppered', &c.

In our minds, we have built an image to accompany the poem and it is very interesting; thank-coos for sharing :>)
