For the one . . .

The Meaning of Poetry

Your poems melt and overflow . . .

You are tough, muscular—

your poetry is soft, flaccid:

like butter / like sponge / like water

like all things soft,

like things one cannot name.

Under the mercy of a rotting skin,

your poems melt & trickle

into a pool of unpoetic spittle—

Without liquifying, how can

you be sure of

the erstwhile shape,

the rigid rotundity,

the contours of a life

lived later in poetry?

Without overflowing, how can

you find meaning in

endless navel-gazing—

the google searching

of your own name?

brimming / spilling / overflowing

What is poetry

but a ceaseless gushing

of muddy metaphors & meter—

panting in thick torrents

from your ego’s stinking crevices?

Many bon mots here. The "Meaning" in the title takes on a duel role.
