The Meaning of Poetry


Your poems melt and overflow . . .


You are tough, muscular—

your poetry is soft, flaccid:


like butter / like sponge / like water


like all things soft,

like things one cannot name.


Under the mercy of a rotting skin,

your poems melt & trickle


into a pool of unpoetic spittle—


Without liquifying, how can

you be sure of


the erstwhile shape, 

the rigid rotundity,


the contours of a life

lived later in poetry?


Without overflowing, how can

you find meaning in


endless navel-gazing—

the google searching 

of your own name?


brimming / spilling / overflowing


What is poetry 

but a ceaseless gushing

of muddy metaphors & meter—


panting in thick torrents

from your ego’s stinking crevices?
