Talking Shop

I'll read a review. Your book would bore me.
Fictional characters always seem dreary and flat
These days. They're paper dolls. Long ago,
Fiction was dense and rich, and the people who
Popped up on its pages, likewise, were round
And whole and compelling. Readers had time,
They took the time, to absorb the details of plot
And persona. Now, they're too busy and they
Have TV, and a novelist, such as yourself,
Faces pressure to cast aside richness. Just get
The job done, which you do in the same way
Some giant machine spits out thousands
Of products each minute which mimick
(Though poorly) what somebody once made
By hand. You make hot dogs. No thanks.
I've prepared for the wurst, and I know what
You're thinking: what about poetry? Clearly,
It's also now cheap and distasteful. Written
By posers, I don't recommend it. You ought
To just read the reviews.
