A New Dark Age

A mob's come. It's like all the others
We've seen: led by cabal of cynical
Charlatans, thieves, more or less, who
Have learned that the money rolls in
When one finds crowds of losers
To fleece, and the losers themselves,
Large in number and pitiful, follow
With effigies, various weapons.
Hobbled by minds which show no
Signs of use, they have come to
Intimidate people, like us, who
Won't parrot their prejudices
And their bigotry, don't endorse
Fables and half-baked conspiracies.
Our world shrinks. A new dark age
Arrives, and what light's left comes
Mostly from torches they wave.
It may be a long time before this mob
Moves past, as the others before it,
And we can escape, but we must remain
Vigilant. New ones keep forming when
Losers and charlatans meet.
