thole: basically, to endure, to put up with. Regional vernacular of Northern Ireland, shamelessly (or Seamusly?) stolen.
Clear and Generous
When I could no longer
thole the preachiness
of the sober dude's share,
I slipped out of the basement
of Our Lady of Lourdes Church
and walked into the parking lot
under clear and generous starlight
of a night just cold enough
& I said my Joyful Mysteries
on a set of small black beads.
I stood in the church's shadow,
a stained-glass rendering
of Bernadette and Our Lady
faintly illumined from within.
