A re-telling of one of my favorite short stories: The Appointment by Schwartz & The Appointment in Samarra by Maugham

An Appointment

Long and hard were the days the boy did work his Pop’s farm
On an errand he went walking into town
While looking around he ran into lady death who called to him
On his heel he turned and bolted for the door
He ran hard all the way back to the farm
Panting, he told his Pop what happened
“Let me take the horse Pop, I’ll ride to the big city where death will not find me.”
Pop lent him the horse and watched the boy flee on his noble steed
Pop went into town looking for lady death, and he said
“Why’d you call to my boy today? He is too young to die.”
“I’m sorry I didn’t mean to call to him, I was only surprised to see him here.” She checked her watch “You see, I have an appointment with him this afternoon in the big city.”
