Lies

They told us we were chosen to deliver
This new world from its former state
Of savagery.  They told us that, though
We'd had slaves, we freed them.  They
Now are our equals.  They said nothing
About men who didn't want to marry
Women, about women who loved other
Women, about all of the alternate forms
Life and love, and they said that
The business owners followed
The established rules.  Competition
Benefitted all of us, and taxes kept
The rich from getting too much richer
Than we were.  They lied to us.  We
Sank.  They told us we were sinking
Only because we no longer believed
What they'd said to us, and many of us
Have turned back, but others stand apart
And wait.  We know that what they said
Was wrong, that what they represent
Is loathsome, and we wait to see all
Of their lies exposed, and their
Misshapen world swirling toward
A drain.  America, that grotesque concept,
Isn't apt to last much longer.  Some
Of us, a few of us, are keen to see it go.
