Ave Maria

You drink your gin, you sip your juice
Your words come fast, your mind is loose
You wave and call for help, no one can see ya
You walk the harbour after dark
You duck the strangers in the park
You take your beads and pray Ave Maria

You improvise a little song
You cry all night, you get it wrong
You watch Italian movies with Sophia
Then morning brings a gentle hush
Till cars begin their startled rush
You sing to heaven's queen Ave Maria

So sitting in the whispered light
You dream of love that makes things right
The saving grace invades your cell to free ya
Like Dante blest by Beatrice
Whose eyes are sweeter than a kiss
Your captured heart proclaims Ave Maria

You've fought some battles, lost and won
Your final chapter's just begun
You shout to God hey what's the big idea
Those frightful wars still rage inside
Of scalding hate and damaged pride
With dying breath you cry Ave Maria
