To the bitter end

On this one street
in my long lost
hometown.

Two men sat
on their porches
overlooking
life outside with
grim faces.

The houses
not within
eyesight.

Their hearts
and souls
much, much
further away.

I know why
and it hurts
to know that
decades of
misery and dispair
could have been spared,
them and many a kin.

If only
these brothers
had asked eachother
for forgivness….

Your poem tells that story we hear all too often. The best in us causes the 'if only' you describe. The worst, finds no way to grasp an olive branch. This is who we are, super unique beings, and sometimes just downright plain idiots!
