A Simple Request

The clock has fallen silent.  Time still passes,
But with better manners.  It no longer grasps
At me.  I turn away from all its admonitions,
And I close my eyes.  “Run along without me,”
I suggest.  “You know that, soon enough,
I'll fall in behind you.  I'll catch up but, for
A few brief moments, let me tell myself
That I might choose another way.”
