Drag on, at stalemate, until the combatants,
More weary than angry from dying and debt,
Strike a bargain to redraw the maps and stop
Shooting, but years may go by. So much will be
Lost. Perhaps if the bear baiters set an example,
If England said it would withdraw from Scotland,
And Ireland, possibly even Gibraltar,
And the US gave back all of the land that it
Seized from the Mexicans and the Hawaiians,
The Russians would say, “Okay; we’ll go
Home, too,” and the war would end sooner,
But those things won’t happen. The bear
Baiters don’t want to be good examples.
They just hope to slaughter the bear.
