THE DODO (Additans)

A bird that could not fly
Could not run fast
In short, could not get away!
Could not fight could not take flite!
Unable in any way to defend
The Dodo's self nor The Dodo's kin
Even not being The Dodo
As the Dodo had no need
Lived happily on an island
No predators to hunt The Dodo
Then came along the most dangers

Predictor of all - humankind
Came along ships
Landed on the Dodo Wee island
The Dodo, totally unaware of the danger of humankind!
Could not defend the Dodo self
Humankind hunted the Dodo for easy food
Even complained the Dodo, tasted ' horrible! '
BUT, the Dodo were easy to catch and kill!
And as we know, there is now no Dodos - victims of genocide!

The Last Widely Accepted Sighting A Dodo Were In 1662.

The story of the Dodo was one of the saddest when I learned about them in school. I mourned, and still do, their extinction.

From childhood I have mourned the Dodo. This really spoke to me.

I wonder, was the last one killed, or did it simply die alone and lonely, like Martha the last Passenger Pigeon?

It is an interesting anecdotal poem, Ken. I use that adjective because I am accutely aware that history often tells us what the historians want us to believe. That said, your fine poem illustrates - in a more broad way - how the actions of Mankind have wreaked havoc on this planet's fauna and flora. The question is: Do we have the intelligence and the desire to do the right thing now that we are aware of this?
