109th Letter to Elena

I wish I could have holed up
in a Wisconsin monastery
& never come back to Boston

or stayed as your guest in perpetuity
with coffee & soup & Wauwatosa
& walks across Marsupial Bridge

I wish I could have stayed with you
where the tenor of life was gentle
where the voices inside me were kind

why can I not abide in a heaven
where all the angels have poems for wings
& flimsy dimestore plastic ankle-bracelets

lead me to rivers of crystal-throated music

lead me to pastures lavish with morning-glories

A beautiful, and muscular, display of yearning. This poem is special
