Requiem for a Moral Universe
All those lofty terms no longer much discussed by academics:
Truth and Justice, Right and Wrong, and Free Will or Determination,
Sit, like someone's dotty uncle, in a shuttered room somewhere.
The poor logicians, lost in clauses, found they couldn't make a case
For even one. They need a god, a superhero term enforcer, to
Proclaim that they exist, but, though a host of faithful flunkies
Offered up amusing arguments for such a thing's existence,
God's not evident to us. A fantasy with some appeal, His
Messengers make lots of money. His homes can be beautiful,
But, in the end, He goes unseen, and those things He would
Have us have, those long-abandoned lofty terms, are logicless,
And wholly lost. They prove to be absurd.
