to the bat cave

in the autumn before they hibernate
these bats get cosy and furiously mate
then hang from cave ceilings ‘til spring
when their brood, storks begin to deliver

late bloomers get their chance in winter
just before the ice melts, risking life and limb
setting upon sleeping prospects
as documented by Sir David Attenborough

a strange tale of nature’s progeny
and the quirks of mammals of this Earth
