an acrostic

kerfuffle

Kilts askew in a wind not their own,
Every voice raised, none in key—
Rhetoric twisting like car,
Flailing, fraying, proper turned peculiar.
Upheaval in whispers and wild-eyed wails,
Fuffle of facts and jackets and pride,
Fates braided with bluster, then—just like that—
Laughter spills like ale from a cracked tankard.
Either step round the stooshie… or square up and dance in it.

.

A kerfuffle is a lighthearted word for a commotion, fuss, or small disturbance, often caused by a disagreement or misunderstanding. It’s the kind of mild chaos where people might be flapping about over something that’s perhaps not all that serious. Think: a heated debate over pineapple on pizza, or an office squabble about who moved the stapler. It’s originally from British English, with Scottish roots—possibly derived from the Gaelic word car (meaning “twist” or “bend”) and fuffle (to dishevel). Stooshie, by the way, is a wonderfully Scottish word for a fuss or row—like a kerfuffle’s rowdier cousin.
