The City Will Not Sleep Tonight

The city will not sleep tonight.
Too many feet walk on its streets—
Cacophonous.
And up above,
There’s gilded wires shined warm and bright.
Bestowing day-time glow though night.

The city will not sleep tonight.
Hawkers, peddlers, and shopkeepers
Shout loud and strong, tuneless, in unison.
Their song returned by customers.
Point. Counterpoint. Creating fugues
Not to dance to but rather drown.

The city has been overcome.
It will not sleep tonight. There’s much
Madness but also magic here.
Why sleep when dream has seeped
Through to the waking world?

The city will not sleep tonight.
It’s having too much fun.
