Forget the Past

Is it okay to breathe a sigh?
Is it okay to forget the past?
Is it okay to forgive what you did in the past?
Is it okay to realize you were the bad guy?
That you hurt her?
That you were as much to blame?
That you were, perhaps, more to blame than her?
Is it okay to realize that and move on?
Should you move on?

Should you not wallow in self hatred and guilt?
Should you not wring her memories out of your mind,
Through your ear, and make a crown of thorns from it,
And wear it forever hanging your head in shame?
Or is it okay to realize that, no, you made mistakes
But the mistakes you made was because she wasn't
The One?
Is it okay to realize that and move on?
Is it okay to forgive what you did in the past?
Is it okay to forget the past?
Is it okay to breathe a sigh?

Sameen,

I too have a difficult time forgiving myself for mistakes. I’m old and still flogging myself, in my mind, for the choices I made which caused others pain. I wish I knew how to let it all go. The best I can offer is that if hanging on to the guilt and the grief brings about personal growth, then for me it’s worth it. It’s the people who don’t self-reflect I worry about.

Sincerely,
Melinda
