Raga Darbari
To hear Pandit Pran Nath sing
Raga Darbari
is like standing high up in the mountains,
hearing a car labor its way upward
in switchbacks
far below in the mist
And the body is only a disguise
for cosmic skeins
only a focusing of contending wills,
paradoxical emotions
provisionally assembled
in this anatomy
in awaiting
in relinquishing
in evading
away through the chronologies
And I incline my thought
toward a sustaining feeling
and hear Pran Nath pour spirit
into matter
while virginal worlds rise
from the gaps of memory
The drone from Brahman
is so low in frequency
that it is easily lost
in the intergalactic background noise
