Bookends
I’m sorry
that this book is going to end
at the end; that I will reach the end at the end
of Helen Macdonald’s H Is for Hawk
(ISBN 978-0-8021-2473-9) –
but I read it
already, years ago,
and it ended then,
when I had read it to the end,
and now I’m reading it again,
on my way toward the end, where it ends
when I have read all the pages
in order,
one after another,
left-hand pages & right-hand pages,
left-hand pages & right-hand pages,
left-hand pages & right-hand pages,
to the final page; page 283
It was Dante,
the goshawk who came to our farm
and stayed for just under a week, now in August,
who made me take out Macdonald’s book
again,
and sadden myself once more
with its inevitable end,
now – with the new experience of Dante –
(whom I’m still watching for)
sadder still
that it ends on the last page
