A daring rescue with a twist..... :P I wrote this for school last year, just a bit of fun.

The Rescue

A man was walking down by the river
He dipped in a toe and withdrew it with a shiver
When suddenly he heard a shout
And hurriedly he looked about
On the far bank a woman shrieked
Standing in the water, only knee deep.

"My dear!" He yelled back, "Pray tell what is wrong?"
"My baby was paddling!" She yelled before long
"I thought she could swim, I thought all that age could!
If I could turn back time, Oh how I would!
"But then she fell in, with a flop and a splash,
"And didn't come up!" She yelled in a flash.

For a moment the man stood, frozen in time
Then went into the water in a dive that was fine
It was a great shock, for the water was chill
But he took a great breath and went under still
He looked around and saw a small figure
He swam toward it, arms pumping with vigour.

He grabbed onto a limb and tried to swim up
But the current held him down as it hit him with a thump
The icy water made all of him numb
He tried to yell out but it still kept him dumb
He felt the body go limp in his arm
And felt the urge to keep it from harm.

He gave a great kick and at last saw the sun
He panted for breath, as if after a run.
He paddled to the woman and put her baby on the bank
Then collapsed on the sand, his hair wet and lank
The woman made a cradle for the baby in her hat
And said "Thankyou kind sir, for saving my cat."

Edna Sweetlove
This reminds me of what I told my mother when I was young. I said that if I saw a baby and a cat drowning in the river, I would save the cat.

Therefore I see nothing amusing in your poem. But thank you for reminding me of that day when I made my mother laugh with maternal pride.
