A long trip home. A very long trip...

Miles

Nocturnal creatures stir the air
The dew fresh on the ground
My navigator wags her tail
She knows we're homeward bound

But as she slowly settles in
She sensing something wrong
Eyes raised to me as if to say
There's something missing, gone

As minutes slowly melt the hours
Into the break of dawn
The miles they keep a rollin' by
They keep me movin' on

I stop to stretch our weary bones
An image clouds my mind
Engaging me insistently
I'm someone left behind

I need some smokes a tank of gas
I wander 'round the place
The cashier swipes my credit card
I drift in outer space

Back on the road the hammer's down
Consuming desperate need
I'm passing people left and right
And jackin' up the speed

But little do I realize
If only I could see
This endless trek of grey I'm on
Is all that's left for me

A sad song fills the radio
The music haunts my soul
And lulls me into yesterday
Lone teardrop sneaks control

The mystery soon overwhelms
Projected foolish pride
This sense of missing I've become
Draws deep from my inside

How could I've known the innocence
Behind those baby blues
Concealed such cunning thievery
Already paid my dues

The emptiness now washing in
Confirms I'm in the game
She stole my heart in Jacksonville
I'll never be the same

The miles they keep a rollin' on
I'm lost inside her song
This endless ribbon's leading me
Somewhere I don't belong
