An Alternative Country

What this country needs are more trains
and buses, so that they,
the teamster union, won't run the roads
and we, the people, can drink hairy buffalo punch
and ride like school children to our homes.

What this country needs is more hashish
and less nicotine, so that they,
the smokers, can stand high and mighty
and we, the people, can listen to coughs of joy
rather than jailbirds of prey and shit.

What this country needs are more dreadlocks
and Bob Marley tats, so that they,
you know, and what they stand for, you know, can transform us,
the people, into Pharaoh and Buddhist monk figurines
on coffee tables, in make-shift living rooms.

What this country needs are cooler people
and less drama, so that they,
the cool, can just chill for a while, know what I mean.
And we, the people, can become the dudes and dudettes
we always wanted to be.
