for my uncle bert

Boxed

There you are boxed in and not breathing
We watch them carry you into the church
Of the Madonna with the secret mouse.

Boxed in as if you could be contained!
I should have brought frogs in a box
Not these flowers as you leap me
To accept your lack of life.

Here in my heartland where you always remained
I reach out to touch my youthfulness and you...
Remember how you held me over oceans
Explained I was like your sisters...
Mad as a box of frogs
And just as so much fun.

Tomorrow I will wander to the seven white bridges
Where the willows dabble the water serene
The beck will move slowly and green and deep
You will walk me each step that I dream
Telling me reasons of everything seen.

I cannot say goodbye to you
You are too deep inside my soul...
When you see your sisters
Tell them how you had to grow

frogs leaping uncle bert

Tell them how you made me smile
Each time I thought of you
Of how your sweet existence
Was a pleasure leaping.

Now that you are in your box
The world becomes more square
Looking angeled now uncle
Forever around my corner.
