Everest beckons us to Bethlehem

a Christmas Kathmandu

A Christmas Kathmandu

back from Mass in the cold of morning
out in the sun from twelve to two
return indoors for cheese and crackers, maybe kippers too
solar-powered water heated for bath by four
and all of life is glorious ordained by Daniels, O and U
like Joseph and Mary they give us their best

collapsed into eternity Christmas hearts take flight
seeking new heights wings flapping in fury
to the top of the world Everest capped in snow
low-lying Bethlehem within easy reach
nothing to it like the valley Kathmandu

from the stable the bells summon us
take solar heat to stable cold
to Mary and Joseph
keep Infant Jesus warm
in a Christmas Kathmandu
