It Hurts to be Alone

Workin' in a corner bar,
Singin' my songs, pickin' my guitar.
I must've sung one that hit too close to home.
Some ol' boy wanted to fight,
Yelled at me, "That's not right!"
"It hurts like hell when you're left alone"

It hurts to be alone, when the one you love is gone.
The heartache never seems to go away.
It hurts to be alone, an empty house just ain't a home.
But it gets a little better day by day.

Walkin' through the city park
I met a sad old man, wrinkled and dark.
Cryin' alone 'cause he'd just lost his lady.
For sixty years she'd been his wife,
Cancer took away her life.
He just sat and cried just like a baby.

It hurts to be alone, when the one you love is gone.
The heartache never seems to go away.
It hurts to be alone, an empty house just ain't a home.
But it gets a little better day by day.

The day is done, I'm just got home.
Found a note left by the phone.
"I met someone else, I'm leaving you."
To me this came as quite a blow,
I guess it shows you never know.
When the one you love will say adieu.

It hurts to be alone, when the one you love is gone.
The heartache never seems to go away.
It hurts to be alone, an empty house just ain't a home.
But it gets a little better day by day.

Now this is not a sad song.
It's just some things in life go wrong.
It's the way we handle it that matters.
We can get angry, we can mad.
We can just cry and be all sad.
Just don't let your life turn to tatters.

It hurts to be alone, when the one you love is gone.
The heartache never seems to go away.
It hurts to be alone, an empty house just ain't a home.
But it gets a little better day by day.
