Based upon an Australian documentary on Charles Bean that I watched.

THE ''DIGGER'' POET WITH OUT A NAME

Charles Beans Australian corespondent ,

At Gallipoli 1915 , a gusty , man , or plain

Unaware he was being shot at , he'd clime ,

Out of the Diggers trench , just so he could take ,

A better pitcher , or as he did jump out to grabe a wounded ,

Digger , take him back to his mates , he were shot , cared the bullet ,

To his dieing day , covered the war in France too ,

But all that's bye the bye ,

While at Gallipoli , a young digger preset paper in Charles Beans hand ,

'' Could give it a read if you don't , mate '' , then he was gone ,

Charles Bean '' sure I will '' , but the digger had gone ,

Later , Charles Bean , remembered the piece of paper he'd been given ,

What he found was a roughly written poem , barely legible , speling reil bad ,

Hand writing so hard too read , the Digger had had very little schooling ,

Charles Bean experienced the revolution of and in poetry ,

A revolver that freed poetry and gave it back to the common man and

Woman , and children ,

Charles Bean , never found out the name of the Digger , never saw him a live

Again ,

Saw his body , laid with other Diggers , Charles Bean ask a Digger ,

'' Whats his name , any one know?'' , '' Na , he was with that crowed '',

Pointing too six body's laid out with the unknown poet Digger among them ,

'' They all mated up in Egypt '' , '' Don't recon , they know each other before ,

''Egypt''' , '' They never did anything unless it were together '' ,

''' Well now they now will lay with each other hear in blasted , fooking ,

Bastead , Gallipoli '' ,

Charles Beans , reread the poem of the unknown Digger

That tale just tore me up inside Ken. Thanks for sharing.
And I echo the sentiments of countryfog - a curiosity within me rises to read that poem that Charles Bean had been handed.

Poetry never dies along with the writer. I really enjoyed reading this, Ken.

Your friend,
John.
