A beautiful evening, as tonight

Last year I visited my husband every day.

After dinner, he was tired
he followed me to the elevator.

We hugged and kissed goodnight.

We smiled at each other.

He, in the wheelchair
when the elevator doors shut.

I put on my sunglasses
they were black.
Now I could let the tears come.

The night was early.
On my way home, past the crowded pavement cafés.

It was a lovely, warm evening.

A year ago at this time
we were also there
enjoying a glass of wine.

Very poignant, and haunting in the sense that you leave it to the reader to surmise the circumstances that preceded the opening line, and those that followed the last. The only sure thing is that there is love.
