A CHANCE MEETING

Some years ago while walking in Canterbury , Kent

I was about to pass a girl, who was begging fore loose

Change

She had a dog , I remember , the only creature she could trust

We got to talking , I ask her age , 14 , she confided

'' Why aren't you at school , love? '' , I ask her

'' I wish I could be at school '' , '' Then why don't go to school?''

'' I'm not from around hear '' , '' Where are you from? '' , I asked her

'' Birmingham '' , ''Do you know it? '' , '' Yes I do '' I replied

'' But what are doing hear in Canterbury? '' '' Long way from Birmingham ''

Then she told me her story

Affter I treated her to a bacon sandwich

'' I've run away from a children's home ''

''Why were you as the home , love? ''

'' Cos my dad , brother , uncle and me dads best mate ''

'' Were doing things to me ''

'' School and the social services and the cops found out ''

'' The social put me in care '' '' I thought I'd be safe there ''

'' Only I weren't 'cos it happonde there as well ''

'' So I ran away , thats why now I am hear ''

'' I will be moving on soon ''

I gave her some of my backer

'' At least I don't drink like some or do drugs ''

She said looking at an empty beer can as she spoke

'' I wish I could be at school '' , she said with sadness in her voice

Every one has a story to share

Soup in the Sand
Very powerful write, here, Mr. Ken D. Williams. Reminds me so of some of the young lasses I have come across here in FL from time to time. They stream down here from all over, trying to escape some horror or other....very, very affecting write. So glad you were there to show her there are still kind human beings in the world, to instill some hope, as you always do. Wonderful write!!

Earlier this year there was a young homeless girl and her dog outside the WalMart . . . she had a sign saying she was trying to get back home (to a state near here). I gave her what money I had, and she was grateful, and I felt good about myself. But I didn't give her my time or my care, as you did, and I realize I should feel ashamed instead.
