A poem written for a class assignment - use words found in a work not meant to be poetry. I chose "The Birth of Coffee," by Daniel Lorenzetti and Linda Rice Lorenzetti.

java poem

the fazendeiro seized
the rumah adat,
thereby
assuming life
in a matrilineal society
and disregarded
crop workers' feelings
as he sipped
exquisite sumatran prime java
from porcelain cups

goats tracked over the tarp
in a grandiose maneuver
to distract the mind
from the present moment
of suffering -
patriarchal society
does no favors
for earth's minorities

(cultural diversity is not an illusion)

Intellectual but earthy still, great motions in this piece, great melody

Well done, Thomas. I assume that you got the good grade you deserve for this.

There are images here, and a theme, that are truly poetic. It's more than clever, it has resonance. Bravo.
