When you need to get your mind off things

(And there's a shout out in here for my writing friend Ashe ;-)


Distract your mind

Come let's talk about something different
For distraction's sake
All your thoughts in a twist
Sucking the life out of you
Grinding everything to a halt
Transfixed on a hurt
Your brain keeps turning it over and over
Trapped in a churn
Looking at it from this angle
And that angle
Arriving at the same conclusion
So you are wounded

Come let's talk about something different
For distraction's sake
Notice the trees
The buildings
Read a book
Find bugs in the soil
Call up an uncle
An old friend
Write some poetry
Read some poetry from Ashe
She seems in love
Things are going good for her
Anything
Just get your mind off the trouble
Get some healing
Some salve for your aching heart

It's more your mind though that needs redeeming
The actions of others you cannot control
Reaction you must muster
Stabbed in the back and the front
But you didn't die did you
Take a mental break
Look away from the pain
Sports
The weather
Politics
Movies
Climate change
Anything
Come let's talk about something different
For distraction's sake
Heal the pain of heartbreak

Well done, and I will, just for you, think of something new. I am surrounded by the beauty of nature and an iguana who's taken up residence in my tree, but I am Latin and by nature a sad romantic. Those are the poems that come easiest for me. :)
