A French invention from the twelfth century, the alexandrine is the standard line of traditional French poetry since the sixteenth century and has an importance comparable to blank verse in English poetry.


Sundry Lines in Alexandrine

As poet, I aspire to Mount Parnassus's seat;
and labor all the day, so my odes flow with beat:

as poet, I have miles to go before I sleep,
before I plumb the depths; and probe Pieria's deep!
