Prayer

Great God of Love, without you I am nothing
Without you I do not even cast a shadow
You are my substance my form
I exist only in you

Guard me against the paralysis of my fears
Grant me the strength to live with the consequences of my actions
May I always act for those who cannot
To win fairness where none is present

May I see you in everyone I encounter
Feel your presence in my adversaries
Act in your name in support those who have nothing
Celebrate your greatness with my every breath

Thank you for my strength, my imagination and my innovation
I will use these gifts to keep your light gleaming
In a darkening world
Thank you for my fear and frailty.
They define my extents that I may surpass them

May I find peace in the struggle of living
Knowing that the struggle is good and the fight worthwhile
If Fairness Dignity and Love are the process and the goals

"act in your name in support of those who have nothing" --- yes, my kind of prayer!

Dame Edith Sitwell once wrote of Dylan Thomas, "His pity for the outcast, his love for those who have received no mercy from life, are great." Your words here summon to mind Dame Edith's graceful and gracious description of my favourite poet.
