I knew them both. brought them food clothing and listened to their stories. We tried so hard to access an overburdened social safety net that couldn't save him but ironically found her a home just after his death.

My friend Karl died today
In ICU due to systems failure
He died three weeks past they say
I found out on the local news hour
Karl and his lovely wife Sandra
Were both homeless on the street
Karl had an angry frustrated mantra
Sandra calmed him by rubbing his cheek
A house fire was what began it all
They lost everything they had
Without insurance ruin took its toll
No money no hope things just went bad
My friend Karl died today
In ICU due to systems failure
His body’s systems just gave way
Mortally wounded by society’s failure
