The issue of egoistic love

Does love have to be egoistic
in order to be credible?
Is altruistic love an absurdity, impossibility,
improbability and someting to be just discarded
as out of all reality, a weird and alien unacceptablity,
and yet that kind of love is usually the first we all experience
as we fall in love when we are young and innocent and undestroyed,
and that's the kind of love we always will remember in the end,
the first love, before all disappointments and betrayals,
tragedies and hard adversities and painful losses,
before we reached of age, maturity and sore sobriety,
before we were so ruthlessly cured of all naïvety,
good faith and optimism, before we came of age,
and had to spend the rest of our lives
to yearn for that original sweet innocent and perfect love
that only wished to give and never ask for anything in return.

Well, if that is how you feel, getting older, you must have missed out completely. I certainly don't miss that early rush, that instinctive arousal beyond any limits. If you LONG for that shit, you must have stopped dead in your development. On the contrary, I am happy with the calm trust of an old relationship; the knowledge that you care for someone who cares for you, whom you love warmly and who loves you warmly, although both you and her are well aware of each other's faults and shortcomings; whom you love WITH her shortcomings and vice versa - and whom you will always help and support and who will always help and support you, as she is, as you are. That is the sweetness of old age in a relationship.
