Reflections on a Rainy Memorial Day
As the end of the third of the days that are commonly thought to mark
The beginning of summer nears, it's raining; the air is cool, much as it was
The two days before. A portent? Will summer this year be a bust?
It's too soon to say. The weather could change. In fact, no one would be
Surprised if we were faced with record heat, with storms much larger
And destructive than the ones we used to see. The planet warms,
And, though the scientists have warned things could get worse if we
Don't change our deadly ways, cars and trucks still idle everywhere in
Restaurant drive-up lanes. Coal and oil and gas are burned to produce
Electricity, and steel, and cement, everything, and all those in
The drive-up lines applaud the fools who reassure them that the planet
Isn't warming. We can go on as we have. Thanks to them, though it's
Not clear that this year's summer won't be nice, in years to come,
We're apt to label every one a bust.
