Toxic Friendship

Nobody talks about toxic friends
Ones that you adore and want to connect with till the very end
But ones that only speak to you when they have something to gain
And completely disregard all the confusion and the pain
It’s like a battle between yourself, should I stay or should I go
Messages unread for days, is that the final blow?
After days of absence they reappear and you tell yourself I’ll do the same as what they’ve done to me
But within minutes your opening the message rather than leave it be
Because you could never make someone feel like they’ve done something wrong
Make them feel unloved, unwanted not knowing where they belong
One week it’s back and forth the next it’s flat line,
And all you seem to do about it is sulk and whine
Because you long for the friendship you used to have together
And just feel like your stick in a cycle now and what feels forever

Melissa I understand where you're coming from,
I myself like many others have fair Weather friends.
Who never stayed in touch, Think we should
forgive them, sometimes it's hard for people
to even pick up the phone. With dementia it keeps
me from remembering names and sometimes
face's. As always love reading your poetry.

Some of us have been told that to keep friends we are to show ourselves friendly but that can open us up for abuse and toxicity. Perhaps to be a true friend is to suffer the injustice that may come our way. Hard to say.
