Alaska

Long ago, the trees had finished losing their leaves,
(There is not a single insect in them either.)
Snow upholsters the arid earth white ;
while the Grizzlies have been hibernating since October.

Willow grows, changing from a light brown to a white...
Rodents sleep under the deep snow, covered by it like a warm quilt.
(January could bring dramatic and starkly low temperatures),
During this time, the Yukon runs unnoticed under thick layers of ice.

The majestic mountains are snowy, cold, mighty, and massive;
(a dreamy intertwining between them and the long, endless nights).
Hoar and ice fog dance around frosted Conifers,
An extended biting Winter that lasts from October through March.

And crossing considerable distances to reach the seas;
where tympanums are breaking off, like rebellious adolescents
from their parents,
Who had been watched over for tens of thousands of years
by a sleeping giant, the Bering Glacier,
(a concerned father who, from afar, clings and lingers
to hold hands with another continent;
with a jealous attachment, like a devoted husband to his beloved spouse).

An interesting and fact-filled poem. Although I have been there in person, via the magic of TV and a program called 'Building Alaska', and your bolstering poem, I could see all that you described so well. Nicely done. Blessings, Allen
