I wrote this poem in April of 2025. I was feeling overwhelmed in the chaos of current events and was longing to feel connected to the wonder of the earth - to still my mind and enrich my soul.

In the Stillness

It is so what I need -
to feel grounded with the earth,
to hear birds singing,
each chirp a thread of connection.
To be so still I can see the flowers blossoming,
petals unfolding,
bees buzzing with joy.

To witness the tiny bright green
of oak leaves unfurl into a canopy of protection,
readying to shade us from oncoming heat.

It is so what I need -
to walk in the cool water of a mountain spring,
pick up a stone tumbled to smoothness.
Where did you start your journey, little stone?
How did you find your way here,
resting beneath my feet?

To feel the air around me,
lifting me above it all.
Free. Able to breathe again.
The world feels too much.
I need to go home.
