Shelved
Among the best sellers I hide, comfortable in my anonymity,
content to stay on the shelf,
avoiding the hungry eyes
that might read my soul,
misinterpret my depression as sullenness.
I have been shelved with humor
but literary fiction is my rightful genre,
a subtle plot woven with ordinary characters
masking their own extraordinary lives,
a chapter I nearly didn't survive,
followed by an unlikely love story,
now, still writing the chapter I'm in.
There is no surprise ending coming,
no waking up to a different storyboard,
my past written in ink, not pencil,
knowing others will reword, erase, embellish,
once the book is closed,
my editing finished.
