Only One, Goes Out, Says
It is heavy
but he does, says
He smells old, washes himself,
is starting to forget, has not long left,
is not well, is only one,
is only one, one single,
goes out, sees, says,
gives, gives back, says,
a small man, high up
on the stage, vanishingly small,
immense on enormous screens,
has itching, pain in his leg, starts to forget, feels dizzy,
sits behind the piano, can hardly stand,
is only one, but does, says, comes, steps out
onto gigantic stages, does, says, remembers, retrieves, says,
sees the people, tens of thousands
“sometimes my burden is more than I can bear,
it's not dark yet but it's getting there”
comes forward, stands, keeps balance, nods,
goes out the back way, a cognac, a bit of food,
gets a ride to the hotel
where no one asks, no one demands, no one lets on
that he is a little old man who may be in pain,
needs rest, will reasonably soon die,
smells like the very old smell,
a small one, who has come, who has stepped out
on enormous stages, has spoken,
leans back afterwards,
falls asleep, dreams,
is, a small one, only one, does, says
