To wake
is to be summoned
To speak
is to keep someone alive
a little longer
Names of work
are resurrection words.
They raise rooms,
raise hands,
raise wages,
raise the dead machinery
A voice joins.
Another holds
A song finished
with borrowed breath
crosses the room
I carry the bowl
like an offering
away from the cry
The world is iced.
Broken gestures lie everywhere
Life insists.
The pen answers
Freedom returns
only to find water
where ground once was
What comes back
does not arrive intact
The year that dies
knows this
The year that comes
pretends not to
