Leave the Light On
Once I chased the imaginedwhile longing for the reality
of a love lasting and true,
absent from longing,
grounded in the surety
of authentic being.
A love I had
in whom kindness stood steady
but for whom
commitment kept its distance.
Compartmentalization -
the method of his sanity.
Accepting the reality
meant managing the imagined,
dampening my hope
and choosing the gift
of what was possible
without expectation of more.
Once he departed, the imagined
became a dream past its prime,
much like me.
Extraordinary how when
hope is set aside
surprises come knocking.
