Bite Me Bloody

Whatever I read
I have to bite my lip
to restrain the storm,
become a safety valve
for today’s far too wild emotions;
bite hard
at every crystal-clear memory,
identifying with the smallest wretch’s
longing in this life;
whole grass plains’ untamed movements
beneath the gusts of wind;
the ants’ particular group consciousness
out there in the forest hush
and the universality of the smallest injustice

I have to bite my lip
for the thinnest ray of sunlight
that lights up a moment
with insight;
bite hard,
bite me bloody
for the image of an old friend
who meant everything
and has grown old;
the image rising in my head,
bleed for all that has caressed
and struck,
and all who move restlessly
within my feelings
and everything honest been said
