I’m feeling very disheartened about the state of the world right now.

I Believe God Weeps: A Lament for the Suffering of the World

Whenever
the desires
of the powerful
are prioritized
over the needs
of the vulnerable,
I believe God weeps.

Whenever the wealthy
party on yachts,
toasting each other
on their net gains,
while children go to bed
with stomachs grumbling
and parents struggle
to provide,
I believe God weeps.

Whenever
leaders of nations
choose war
as a means
of enriching the few,
as innocent people
breathe in toxic fumes
or drown in oceans deep,
as they bury their dead,
lives ended abruptly, mercilessly,
I believe God weeps.

Whenever politicians post
propaganda, fanning division,
using their corporate connections
to shape the laws,
while people divide into tribes
pointing fingers at the “other,”
blaming everyone but
the ones in control
for their troubles,
I believe God weeps.

Whenever a person
stands upon a pulpit
delivering a political message
instead of the most important message
of love in action,
while slinging shame upon women,
demanding blind obedience of children,
and equating donations
with salvation,
I believe God weeps.

Whenever law enforcement
becomes something to be feared
instead of sought for protection,
while people scurry and hide,
are dragged into darkened vans
and disappeared,
when the color of one’s skin
dictates the length of one’s sentence,
I believe God weeps.

Whenever those who govern
demand a child be born
though the mother dies,
when a person must conform
to the identity they decree,
when books are banned
out of ignorance and fear,
I believe God weeps.

I cannot list every reason.
The list has no end.

But I know this:

wherever
justice is denied,
empathy is overlooked,
love is broken —

God weeps.

And so do I.
