That Something Within

Between emotion and logic,
bravery steps forth,
striding with purpose -
a conviction
that the risk is worth
the consequences,
those murky maybes
of infinite possibilities.

At other times, bravery,
propelled by something
deeper than reason,
chooses to move forward -
running headfirst,
without forethought,
adrenaline rising
so that risks become puddles
rather than a field of land mines.

But there is a third kind -
a quieter bravery
that, with gentle steps,
keeps moving forward
through silent battles,
fighting monsters
only they can see.
And still, they rise,
placing one foot
in front of the other,
walking through fog.

Perhaps bravery
is simply this -
something within
that does not turn away,
even when it could.
